Up to 98% of our fresh food carries pesticides: Proportion of produce with residues doubles in a decade

Almost half of all fresh produce is affected by use of the substances, and a proportion of supermarket food with residues has almost doubled in decade

A massive proportion of our  everyday food is contaminated with pesticide – with up to 98 per cent  of some fruits carrying traces of the chemicals.

Almost half of all fresh produce is affected by increasingly heavy use of the substances, a study of official figures has revealed.

Overall, the proportion of supermarket foods with pesticide residues has almost doubled in a decade.

Some 46 per cent of fresh fruit and vegetables, such as grapes and apples, contained residues, up from 25 per cent in 2003.

In terms of processed food, residues were found in almost 97 per cent of flour and 73.6 per cent of bread.

In most cases the traces were below internationally recognised safety levels, however critics argue many of the substances are a known risk to human health and warn that the cumulative ‘cocktail effect’ of even very low levels may be harmful.

The figures are based on an analysis of government surveys involving hundreds of tests on 40 food types for 372 different pesticides.

They found 91.3 per cent of grapes were contaminated, while almost three in 100 were above the legal maximum residue level. They were also found on 98 per cent of oranges, 90.6 per cent of apples and 73 per cent of carrots.

Advocates say the chemicals protect crops and boost yields, which helps to keep food prices down.

Farmers also use them to prevent blemishes and to ensure fruit and vegetables meet the ‘beauty’ standards demanded by supermarkets. According to the figures within the report Pesticides On A Plate, published by the Pesticide Action Network UK today, the most common pesticide found was carbendazim.

The group said there is evidence linking it to developmental damage to mammals in the womb, as well as cancers and birth defects.

It was found on apples, beans with pods, cucumbers, grapes, oranges, pine-apples, pre-packed salads, raspberries, rice, some citrus fruits and spinach.

Heavy use of certain pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos, has been associated with the decline in bees, vital to pollinate food and other crops.

In theory, consumers can protect themselves by washing or peeling produce. But a study published by the Food Standards Agency last year found this is not always effective. Experts at the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland found residues of the antioxidant diphenylamine and the fungicide carbendazim on apples ‘were not decreased by washing’.

Washing also failed to remove chemicals from potatoes – which are frequently eaten in their skins.

A consumer study published alongside the latest figures found three in five Britons are concerned about pesticides in food.

Catherine Fookes, of the Organic Trade Board, which encourages shoppers to choose foods produced without such chemicals, said: ‘The increasing presence is worrying and needs to be addressed. Consumers can and should ask questions.’

A government spokesman said: ‘The Chemicals Regulations Directorate monitors pesticide use closely. Their reports into levels are made publicly available on their website.’

Call for pesticide ban as two spoonfuls kill river wildlife

Water minister Richard Benyon has called for a clampdown on a pesticide that "seriously" polluted the River Kennet between Wiltshire and Berkshire.

The MP said an "egg cup" of Chlorpyrifos affected a 10-mile (16km) stretch of the river, killing shrimp.

Mr Benyon said the "fragile eco system" of the river had been "devastated". He added the tiny amount of pesticide that caused the damage was "terrifying".

The Environment Agency is investigating the source of the pollution.

'Nothing to eat'

Chlorpyrifos is routinely used as an insecticide in agriculture, in fruit farming and at municipal parks and golf courses.

Freshwater shrimp, mayfly and caddis fly in the river appeared to have been wiped out by the pesticide, "leaving birds and fish with nothing to eat", an Action for the River Kennet (ARK) spokesman said.

The pesticide entered the Kennet via a sewage pumping station in Marlborough, Wiltshire and affected wildlife downstream in Hungerford, Berkshire.

Only professional people are authorised to buy and use it.

Mr Benyon, who lives by the River Kennet in Newbury, has called on Defra to look into imposing more restrictions.

"The worry is that this chemical is purchasable online," he said.

A Defra spokesperson said: "When used wrongly, pesticides can have devastating effects on wildlife, as happened here".

She added it was working with the Environment Agency to investigate the incident.

David vs. Monsanto: A Documentary on GMO - Percy Schmeiser (Documentary video)

If you are unaware of the true nature (sic) of Monsanto and how this powerful corporation destroys lives, you really need to watch this film and listen to what Percy Schmeiser has to say. This is one of the most important and eye-opening documentaries out there and is certainly worth an hour of anyone's time.

Imagine that a storm blows across your garden – and that now, without your knowledge and without your consent, foreign and genetically-manipulated seeds are in your vegetable patch which you have nourished and maintained for many years. A few days later, representatives of a multi-national corporate group pay you a visit at home, demand that you surrender your vegetables and file a criminal complaint against you requesting a fine a $20,000 USD against you – for the illegal use of patented and genetically-manipulated seeds.

What’s more: The court finds for the corporate group!
Yet, you fight back….

This short story is no utopia – rather, around the world, the bitter truth. It is also the true experience of the family of Percy and Louise Schmeiser in Canada, also winners of the Alternative Nobel Prize, who meanwhile have been fighting the chemicals and seed manufacturer Monsanto since 1996. Nowadays, nearly three-fourths of genetically-manipulated plants harvested worldwide originate from Monsanto’s labs.

Monsanto is a U.S. based corporate group which calls the dismal inventions such as DDT, PCB and Agent Orange its own. In its efforts to gain absolute hegemony over plants – from the field all the way to teh consumer’s plate – Monsanto knows no qualms. The farmers Tony Rush, David Runyon and Marc Loiselle also learned the hard way what it means to be confronted with Monsanto’s methods of doing business, as did thousands of other farmers worldwide.

They and the Schmeisers are not just fighting against Monsanto – and with that, for the continuation of their livelihood as farmers – but also for the right to freedom of speech and the right to their property.

Yet above all, they are campaigning for the future of their children and grandchildren – so that they too, will have a chance to grow up in a world without genetically-manipulated food.

This film is reassuring…reassuring to all who fear that as an individual, no one would have any power to confront policy makers, large corporations or the business world. “David vs. Monsanto” proves the opposite.

Sweets, fast food and fizzy drinks linked to bowel cancer for the first time

* A diet high in sugar and fat has been linked to colorectal cancer
* Research show high-energy snack foods are a risk factor of disease

Indulging in chocolate and other sweet treats such as biscuits and cakes could increase your risk of bowel cancer, researchers say.

It is the first study to link fatty and sugary snacks to bowel tumours, which claim more lives than any other form of the disease apart from lung cancer.

However, not all treats are off the menu. The British study also found drinking lots of coffee could have a protective effect.

Previous research has blamed processed meat, for example bacon and sausages, for raising the odds of bowel cancer. But the latest study suggests other popular foods fuel the disease as well.

Edinburgh and Aberdeen University researchers asked more than 2,000 men and women with bowel cancer to fill in a lengthy questionnaire about what their diets were like before diagnosis.

You are what you eat: A person who eats fast food,
high in fat and sugar, runs a higher risk of contracting bowel canc
er
Another group of around 3,000 volunteers of a similar age and from similar areas also answered the questions, which covered more than 170 different foods.

Those who ate the most ‘high-energy snack foods’, such as desserts, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, sweets, nuts and crisps, were 18 per cent more likely to have developed bowel cancer than those who ate the least.

The finding held true even when obesity and lack of exercise – two factors already known to raise the risk of bowel cancer – were taken into account.

High quantities of fizzy drinks raised the odds of getting the disease by 12 per cent.

The study, published in the  European Journal of Cancer  Prevention, also linked white fish with the disease. Researchers said this was unexpected but thought it  may be because most of the  fish eaten by participants was cooked unhealthily.
Bad choice: This is the first time that high-energy
snacks have been linked to bowel cancer

Coffee, however, seemed to help. Those who drank lots of it had an 8 per cent lower risk of developing bowel cancer than those who did not. A previous study credited four cups a day with lowering the risk by a quarter.

However, other research has failed to find any benefit. Any benefits could be due to plant compounds in coffee. It may also provide protection by keeping the bowels active.

Edinburgh University researcher Dr Evropi Theodoratou said her study stops short of proving that sugary and fatty snacks cause the disease and other, bigger studies are needed.

She added that while it is unclear  how these foods cause bowel cancer, her findings shouldn’t be dismissed. ‘It is important to take on board what we’ve found – especially because people in industrialised countries are consuming more  of these foods,’ she said.
Help: Drinking coffee can help lower the
risk of getting bowel cancer, research suggests

Jessica Harris, of Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the research, said: ‘While this study on its own can’t show for sure that these foods are linked to cancer risk, it’s still a good idea to limit the amount of high-sugar and high-calorie foods and drinks in your diet. ‘Having too much of these types of foods can lead you to put on weight, which we know is linked to higher risks of bowel cancer.

‘The best ways to reduce the risk of bowel cancer are to cut down on alcohol, get active, eat a balanced diet and aim to keep a healthy weight.’

Mike Lean, professor of nutrition at Glasgow University, cautioned that the figures could have been skewed by the cancer patients placing more emphasis on foods they believed to be bad for them.

He added: ‘We can’t yet start saying that this science shows that these foods cause bowel cancer.
‘But we are fairly sure that eating more fruit and vegetables and taking more exercise can prevent cancer.’

Bowel cancer kills almost 16,000 Britons a year, or 43 people a day.
